A growing body of researchers is asking a question that millions of daily chatbot users might not have considered: if everyone is polishing their writing with the same AI tools, will everyone's writing eventually sound the same?

The Mechanics of Convergence
When you ask a chatbot to polish a paragraph, you are not only correcting grammar. You are inviting the model's learned preferences into your writing. AI models trained on large corpora develop characteristic patterns: sentence rhythms, favored hedging constructions, specific vocabulary, structural habits around how ideas are introduced and resolved. Expressive range and reasoning range are not identical, but they are correlated. If AI nudges everyone toward a slightly narrower expressive repertoire, it follows that certain arguments become easier to reach while others become more effortful to articulate.
The USC researchers are careful to describe their conclusions as preliminary. Homogenization in measured text does not automatically mean homogenization in cognition. But the mechanism is coherent, the data shows a real pattern, and the question deserves sustained attention rather than waiting for the effect to compound.

This is not an argument against using AI for writing. There is genuine utility in a tool that can catch awkward phrasing and suggest clearer constructions. The issue is the degree of editorial distance between the model's output and your final draft.
A few practices that help preserve voice:
Review structural suggestions skeptically. When an AI proposes restructuring a paragraph, ask whether the new structure is genuinely better for your reader or just more typical. These are different questions with different answers.

There is also a distributional question: whose writing is most affected, and who bears the most cost? Academic and scientific writing already push toward uniformity as a feature. Precision matters more than expressiveness in those contexts. Domains that depend on distinctive voice, journalism, legal argument, persuasion, fiction, have more to lose from homogenization.
AI writing tools will continue improving, and their adoption will continue growing. The USC Dornsife research is an early formal measurement of an effect that is almost certainly underway at scale. The more useful question is not whether homogenization is happening, but how much of it is acceptable, and in which contexts voice preservation matters enough to invest extra effort in maintaining it.
